Mermaids

I'm sorry. I forgot to write today's blog post. Fridays come too quickly these days. :)

But I'd like you to know about this 29 faces challenge starting in September. I've done it before and loved it. Click below to read about it and join, if it interests you. I haven't yet decided, if I'll be posting every day, or do a summary on Fridays.

Pirates

Round Robin is a set of 3 cards which one artist starts, send to another to add something to the set and then sends to the third artist to finish everything. Each artist keeps a card that's why there are 3 in a set.

Linda4atc started this one with the pirate, LucyMc added the ship and I finished with the treasure chest and sand.

Randomness:
  • we had a hail storm on Sunday evening. Hail was the size of golf balls. Luckily we had our cars under roof and mom's vegetable garden has a net over it. But fruit trees and the vine took a beating.
  • the cooling down was welcomed though since we had a heat wave after heat wave going up to 40°C. We're lucky, too, that our house has great insulation and it holds a comfortable temp without having an A/C. Sometimes I have to go out to warm myself up. :)
  • my precious kid was a bit hyperactive the other day and threw my bag on the floor containing my kindle and camera. Needles to say the camera took the beating and the screen shattered. It's still working, I just can't see what I'm photographing.
  • we went to the beach for a day yesterday. Even though we didn't choose the best day since it was cloudy and rainy but it was still warm and the water was warm and the kid had a blast playing in the sand.

Just a Girl & Rumpelstiltskin

I haven't done one of these big haired ladies in a while. :)

A while ago I complained about one of the fairytales I was reading to my son for being depressive. Let me tell you about another one titled Rumpelstiltskin. I don't know what it is. Is it just because I'm an adult now and I see the story in a different light? Or have the times changed so much that the old stories don't really fit into our society anymore?

Here's the short version. It has a sketchy start. A poor man visits an evil king and brags about his daughter, saying she can spin straw into gold. Of course it's not true and the girl gets the short straw in this exchange. First off, wouldn't the poor man be rich, if his daughter could do that? Second, how did it not cross this poor man's mind that his daughter would now be in danger because of his claim?

The greedy king wants to test this girl so he has her brought to the castle in a room full of straw for her to spin into gold. He threatens her life, if she doesn't do so by the morning and the girl cries because she has no idea how to spin straw into gold. An imp appears and offers her his help for an exchange. She gives him her necklace. The next day she gives him her ring.

The third day the evil, greedy king promises to marry her, if she spins the straw into gold for the third time. Here's where I ask, why? Why would an evil king want to marry a poor girl when he can continue to threaten her life to get his gold? Here's another catch. After the third day, he doesn't ask her to spin the straw into gold anymore. Again why? Why would this greedy king decide after the third day that he has enough gold? It doesn't make sense. Why marry her and then not get any more gold?

Of course the imp wanted something in exchange the third day as well but the girl had nothing more to give, so he wanted her firstborn to which she agreed. First, who agrees to giving up their first born child? Second, girl, why don't you take off your shoes instead to make an exchange? You'll be a queen soon enough, you can spare them.

This story is not making any sense and the more I read it, the more it annoys me. But, it's my kid's favorite at the moment and I have to read it to him twice a day. He already knows some lines, that cheeky kid. :)

Dragons

Apparently everyone wants a dragon nowadays. :) I guess it's been so ever since the Game of Thrones started. I might be one of few that doesn't watch it. I mean, I don't watch TV as it is and ever since the kid was born, I haven't had the time to watch anything on computer either.

But I did give Game of Thrones a try awhile ago and it just threw me off with all the drama and killings and incest.

Fun fact: Our capitol city Ljubljana in which I was born and raised, has a green dragon as a city symbol.

Marie Antoinette

Randomness:
  • I had to pull my kid out from daycare because it was too traumatic for him (and the rest of us) to even leave home to go there. He'll stay home for another year and if I get a job in between, my mom will watch him.
  • I'm trying out a new "diet" or rather lifestyle to lose weight and I'm down 3 kg in a week. It's called Whole Starch Low Fat Plan Based. The good thing is that I'm not starving myself and then binging. I was actually surprised how easy it is to eat this way.
  • hubby is buying a new car and is dragging me with him to check them out and I'm not feeling it in this heat.
  • I have to cut new ATC blanks because I ran out. I buy a block of large and thick watercolor paper that I have to cut into 2.5"x 3.5". Not a small task.
  • Marie's I made for a swap at ATCsForAll swapping forum.

Fish round robin

Round Robin is a set of 3 cards which one artist starts, send to another to add something to the set and then sends to the third artist to finish everything. Each artist keeps a card that's why there are 3 in a set.

This set was started with a trout by Linda4atc, BexMadeMe added the rocks and I finished it with the rest.

Update: The kid keeps crying when I take him to daycare. He tells me he doesn't want to go and starts crying at home. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like I'm traumatizing him with this. Should I find another daycare? Should I wait another year? Or should I persevere and let him cry? I mean, who would like to go to work, if someone dragged you crying from home and left you there? He stayed there half an hour twice, an hour once and an hour and a half the last time, so it's not like I disappear on him for half a day. Still I feel like I'm doing him a disservice.

A couple of kitties

I started introducing my kid to daycare this week. I talked to him a lot and goodbye was not a problem. But when I came to pick him up after just 30 minutes, he was sobbing. I mean hardcore crying with hiccups.

Apparently all was well until another kid pushed him and then waterworks began. He didn't even want to leave his spare clothes in daycare. We had to go get them and take them back home.

Today is another day and we'll see how it goes.

Oh, boy

Ok, so. I was a really easy child for my parents to have. They can attest to that, especially since they had a lot of trouble and heartache with my older brother. I was very unproblematic in a sense I didn't get in too much trouble and I didn't get into accidents.

I was thinking of myself as a little girl, of how I ever went to the doctor's because of illness. Ok, I had a lot of trouble with ear infections until I got surgery at age 3 or 4 but other than that I was fine. And I thought to myself it must be a gender thing, right?! Girls are the good ones and boys are the "wild" ones.

Because here I am on Monday morning at the doctor's because my kid decided to drink antifreeze from the garage. Yes, you read that right. Anti- freaking- freeze!!!! He's been told before not to drink anything from the bottles in the garage. We put them high up anyway but just in case someone forgets, like that morning when hubby was emptying out the car and left an opened bottle of antifreeze on the ground, he knows he's can't drink it. But he did it anyway. Because he could open the bottle easily and it was pink and he's a 2-year-old.

Seriously kid?! You broke your collarbone when you were not yet a year and a half old and now you're drinking antifreeze at not yet two and a half. I can't even imagine what awaits me yet. He's a courageous little boy. He's not reckless. He holds on so he wouldn't fall but he's not afraid of anything. And I have a feeling this trait of his is going to send us to ER many times more during his childhood.

He's fine. No damage was done. And I'm here thinking how lucky my parents were to have had such an unproblematic child as me.

Sea creatures and fairytales

I’m reading fairytales to my kid. They are well known like Puss in Boots and Little Mermaid (not the Disney one). Now, it’s either I never actually read them even though I know of them, or I actually forgot the storyline entirely. There’s a third possibility that the fairytales have been rewritten which happens a lot with different publishers but essentially the plot remains the same, it’s just the details that change and become more socially acceptable for this time. You know like in the Cinderella story where the stepsisters cut off their toes and hills to try to fit their feet in the glass slipper.

Ok, so I’m reading the Little Mermaid to my kid and it starts innocently enough with the mermaid falling in love with the prince she saved from drowning and wanting to go on shore to find him and live happily ever after. Well, the first twist is when she goes to the sea witch to get a potion to turn her fish tail to legs. Ok, it’s still acceptable for her to sacrifice herself because you expect something good to come out of it even though the little mermaid is going to be in pain the entire time she’s walking and the witch took her voice, so she can’t talk, which I admit is a bit excessive. But, the prince doesn’t know it’s the little mermaid who saved him and he fell in love with another girl who actually found him on the shore after the mermaid put him there.

The little mermaid is heartbroken and I was getting worried that this fairytale is getting a little depressed but I was like, no it has to have a happy ending, so I was still hoping the prince will find out the truth in the end. Except he doesn’t. He ends up marrying this girl who was incognito a princess from another kingdom.

What I didn’t tell you before is that for the mermaid to remain on the shore required a man she was in love with to love her and marry her and be faithful to her to the end. If that didn’t happen she would die because she couldn’t return to the sea. So yeah, the marriage was actually her death sentence. Here she is on this boat celebrating the prince’s wedding knowing she’ll be dead by the morning.

Here comes a second twist. Her sisters, she was the youngest of six daughters, bring her a knife from the sea witch with instructions for her to stab the prince in the heart and when the blood reaches her feet, they’ll turn back into fish tail and she could go back to the sea.

Hold up. What kind of message is that for the kids? Who wrote this fairytale? WTF? Who’s reading this fairytale to their kids? ... I am, obviously. Let me just quickly state here that my kid fell asleep before this part and I was happy about it.

Obviously she didn’t stab the prince because that would make her the villain, and she ended up becoming a daughter of the air because she was suffering but was still brave or whatever. And I’m like what kind of messed up ending is that? Where is the happy ever after? What kind of message is this fairytale trying to portray? Follow your heart, sacrifice yourself for love but instead of getting what you want you end up heartbroken and dead?

Now I’m thinking I might have blacked out the memory of this fairytale because it traumatized me so much. I think I’ll be reading these fairytales myself before I read them to my kid to see what they actually have to say. I must be very na├»ve to expect fairytales to be innocent and have a positive message.

Dolphins RR

Round Robin started by Linda4atc with the gray dolphin, I added the blue one and BexMadeMe finished the cards with the rest. I love how they turned out.

Update on my tattoo. 2 weeks ago I had my tattoo cover-up. The tattoo artist had a tough job to do because my previous tattoo was very geometrical and the new tattoo was not and also it was in color. She covered most of it and I was pleased with it but then something happened.

I don't remember it happening before with my other tattoos, so I was surprised when I removed the protective foil and there was like a layer of slimy color on my skin. It almost looked like the color was sucked out of my skin. Consequently the tattoo looked paler and the previous tattoo is now seen very clearly.

Another thing is that the first tattoo scared my skin. I didn't pay attention to it before but it's visible now with the cover up. When I turn it to light, I can see the raised skin in the shape of the old tattoo.

I now have another appointment scheduled for next week to fix this. Hopefully my skin doesn't decide to reject the color again.
In the picture above, the cover-up after it was done is in the middle and on the right it's after the color was "sucked" out. The tattoo itself is a mama fox and a baby fox shaped in a heart. It represents myself and my kid.

Shark Moley spread

This is the final spread in Moley journal for Evalila on the theme of "(by, in, under) the Sea". I haven't gotten my own Moley back yet but I hope it'll be soon. I made a video of all my spreads done in this round of Moley swap.

If you're wondering what that is, it's an art journal that travels between 10 players and each does their own interpretation of the theme that is set by the owner of each journal.

Last weekend was fun for my kid. On Saturday we went to a birthday party where he had a blast playing with other kids. And on Sunday we went to watch a motocross race. It was possible to rent a bike for the kids but we realized that the kid's bikes were still too big for my kid. Maybe next year.

But the race was fun to watch. The beginning of it anyway because we had to go home afterwards for the kid's nap time. Though it was still interesting because the bikers got lost and didn't know where the track continued, so at some point they all turned back and returned to the start line and had to do it all over again.

Fairytales

Little Red Riding Hood vs. Jack and the Beanstalk. It's been a while since I drew a boy. I still remember how to.

Ok, May weather. Is it going to be hot or cold? One day it's sunny and hot. We're in shorts and even fill up kiddy pool for the kid to play in. The next day it's raining and freezing we have to turn the heating back on. Oh, and on special days it's even sunny and raining at the same time.

I was watching a YouTube video and the message was "Do What You Can't". And it resonated with me because I used "do what you can" as an excuse to stay in my comfort zone.

Here kitty, kitty

What?! One is not like the others? How dare you insinuate little Griffon is different?

We had a little situation here on Monday. In the nearby town a storage with toxic waste caught on fire. Oils, paint, medication, etc., were all going up in smoke. Unfortunately the wind was blowing our way and to other neighboring towns and we smelled the paint here where I live. I can't even imagine what kind of toxic air we were breathing and will continue to breathe long after the "smell" goes away. The most concerning is mercury which is said to be 100-1000 times over the limit in the vicinity.

The officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. The firefighters though did a great job extinguishing the flames in just 4 hours. There were several volunteer fire brigades called from neighboring towns and two professional fire brigades from the cities. All together over 350 firefighters.

I'm reading about the air and water contamination in this area after the fire and I'm worried how this is going to effect people's health. I'm double worried because the kid is supposed to start kindergarten in this town in July.

Blythe doll

I think this card was a request of some sort. It might've been a personal trade or a pick-a-theme swap. I honestly don't remember anymore. I sometimes find an artist trading card (ATC) in backlog and have no idea the story behind it.

Randomness:
  • I've been slacking on the photo books. I have to make two now for the past 6 months. The worst part is choosing the photos because I have too many.
  • The kid decides periodically to skip the afternoon nap. Hope it doesn't become the norm. I need those 2 hours of rest.
  • I love doing round robin ATCs, where 3 artists add to a card and each keeps one in the end, but sometimes the finished card doesn't make it back to me and it pisses me off. Then I have to ask people, if they still have it or it's lost in the mail, and I feel like I'm harassing them.
  • Chuck Norris was in our country last week shooting a commercial. I wish I could say I met him but I didn't. :)
  • My pets are getting old. The oldest two cats turned 16 years old in April. How crazy is that? They don't act old though. The other two in line are 13, next one is 10 and the youngest two are 9 y-o. The little pooch is turning 12 this month and the youngest 8 y.o. It's crazy how I still think of the youngest as 4 years old. It was only the other day when I was ordering kibble for the pooches that I realized they are considered seniors now.
  • At the beginning of the week my mom commented that the little pooch Kika was acting a bit depressed but she ate normally and pooped normally and I didn't find anything tender on her. I knew what was bothering her but it was only after she got her haircut on Tuesday that my mom realized it was all that fur that was depressing her. I talked about this before that she likes to have a short haircut or she literally gets depressed. Weird dog. She gets her fur buzzed every 3 months and now she's all energetic and runs around like crazy.

Thank You card

This is a Thank You card my kid and I did for the Montessori play hour's teacher. We finished in April and he's starting Montessori kindergarten in July. It's going to be great because he's already familiar with the place and their methods.

On another note, we went on a mini vacation to Vienna last week. 3 days in total and two of those were rainy and cold. The last day when we had to leave, of course, the sun came out. But it was a lovely experience. The kid got to ride a double-decker bus, tram and underground train for the first time.

We tried to show him some historical places but he was more interested in heavy construction equipment that seemed to be everywhere. Me, "look, what an awesome building", the kid pointing behind us, "bager" which means excavator in my language.

Ha, and let me tell you a funny story. We were strolling around and the kid ran to his dad from behind and grabbed on to his leg. Then he looked up and noticed it wasn't his dad but a strange man. And being as awesome as he is, he didn't shy away or run back to us, he grabbed his head with his hands, bent over dramatically and said, "oh my" and started laughing. He then proceeded to explain in his abstruse language and wild hand gestures, how he thought it was dad but it wasn't and he made a mistake and it's funny. Everyone around started laughing at his reaction as well. The kid is an actor, I tell you.

Tree of Life Moley

April's moley journal is for Geminorn on the theme Tree of Life. I actually got out my acrylic paints to paint this one.

To remind you, moley is a nickname for an accordion style Moleskin art journal that a group of 10 of us pass along and each artist makes a 3 page spread on the owner's chosen theme for the moley. This moley group started in September last year, and believe it or not, we're almost at the end. Next month will be the last journal spread to do before we all get our own journal back. I'm so freaking excited I can hardly contain myself. :)

P.S. This blog post is scheduled because I'm in Vienna at the moment for a mini vacation. :)

Bartender

Round Robin is a set of 3 cards which one artist starts, send to another to add something to the set and then sends to the third artist to finish everything. Each artist keeps a card that's why there are 3 in a set.

LucyMc started with the bottles, I added the table and frame and Linda4atc finished it all with the bartender and background.

This following thing has happened to me numerous times and it's really starting to piss me off. So, I have a little rant and a message to all my relatives and friends and even some strangers.

Please let my kid cry.

If you see my child crying, and I’m right there beside him, please shut up. By telling my child to stop crying, that big boys don’t cry or you’re pointing out a butterfly, a cat, a truck or Bob the Builder to distract him from crying, you’re doing more harm than good. So, please, stay out of it.

I know your intentions are good. I know it hurts YOU to hear a child cry. And maybe you even think you’re helping me out because you think I’m not capable of stopping my child’s crying. But …

My kid is crying for a reason and I’m right there beside him to comfort him and to talk to him so he can process his hurt. Be it a physical or emotional pain. I’m letting him cry on purpose, so he doesn’t bottle his feelings and ends up an emotionally messed up adult. I’m talking to him, so he can understand his emotions and name them correctly. I’m listening to him so he can process and understand what happened to him.

The whole time I’m doing that, you’re next to me babbling and confusing the heck out of my kid. Please, just shut up and let me handle my own child. If all fails, trust me, I’ll be the first one reaching for a toy to distract him. It’s not that I’m not aware of these tricks, I choose not to use them and rather take another path.

P.S. If you see any child alone, distressed, crying, bleeding, and/or being abused, by all means, please, intervene.

Liberate Your Art Postcard Swap #2

Kat Sloma has been running Liberate Your Art Postcard Swap since 2011 which was also my first time participating. But then I kept missing on the sign up and only managed this year to participate again hence #2.

You can find my post from 2011 HERE and check out my postcards that I've sent then. This year I sent the below ones.

I have original paintings of these images available in my Etsy shop.

In return I only received these 2 postcards which is weird because they were all sent at the same time so they should've traveled together as well. I will add them later when/if they arrive.
  • Tammar from Oregon sent "Fall Maples" photo taken while strolling with her Pug Snort. How freaking awesome is that name for a dog? :)
  • Cynthia sent "Bike Haiku" with her postcard from Scotland I believe
Thank you!
And today, after this blog post was published, I got 2 more postcards:
  • Patrica Mark and her poppy
  • Kat Sloma, the fabulous host of this swap
Thank you!
P.S. It's next week the 19th April and I got the final two cards from the swap.
  • Ron Leunissen with the digital image of a running man
  • and Kathryn V. White with her art and quote postcard
Thank you!

Random cards & electrocuting myself

Bunch of random cards for pick-a-theme swap where the players chose their theme. At least they seem to be color coordinated. :) It happens when you have to color 4 cards in a row and you're too lazy to pick out different colors.

Last weekend we put together the kid's garden swing set with a slide. I'm the one reading instructions because, if I look away for a second to let's say tend to my child, I come back to screws looking through the boards because hubby used the wrong ones. Or let's say I put the kid to sleep for his afternoon nap and I come back to an extra board lying on the ground because someone didn't bother to read the instructions.

This is nothing new. Once my hubby and mom made an effort to put together a cupboard and they ended up putting it up side down. Yes, that's how lost they both are when reading instructions.

What was truly bizarre in this situation was that I ended up electrocuting myself and I wasn't even using any power tools. I was just told to unplug one and it happened. It wasn't bad though. My finger hurt for a while but there sure weren't any dramatic effects like you see in the movies.

Is the household electricity strong enough to kill you or do any real damage? Or was I just lucky? I did wear rubber shoes, so maybe that's the reason I didn't get hurt much.

P.S. I've reopened my Etsy shop and I have some paintings in there for really cheap.

Art Nouveau Moley

For March moley journal I did a spread on the theme of Art Nouveau; William Morris style for redplantlady. Very not my style.

Last week we went to the city and the kid wanted to look at the water when we were passing a bridge over the river. When he was looking, he said, mommy cat. And I was like, no there's no cat. He insisted there was a cat so I looked over the bridge and there was this huge rat like animal just hanging around on the grass area and then took a swim. I knew it wasn't a rat or an otter but I couldn't remember how it's called. The closest I could come to was muskrat but it wasn't that either.

Then we went to visit my great aunt. I'm pretty sure every family has a person that knows an answer to any question you have (and an interesting story to go along with it) no matter how strange it is. I knew this aunt would know what kind of animal it was and even before I could show her the video I took of it, she already had an answer for me (and a story to go along with it). It was nutria. There, mystery solved, just like that.
